The Mercat d’Olivar is located at the historic city centre of Palma de Mallorca. Constructed in 1951, the bright building in the style of Mediterranean architecture is made up of two connected parts, which open up onto a square, much like two welcoming arms, that invite you to take a stroll and serve as a popular meeting point. After 47 years of bustling activity the Mercat de l’Olivar was restructured and transformed into a trading company. Traders are the merchants operating at the market. In 1998 the company obtained an administration license, which led to a thorough rearrangement that lasted until 2003. The fish, meat, fruit and vegetable guilds got reorganized and obtained their own areas, which are still interlinked, communicating the atmosphere of an airy and collaboratively well organised market hall. The natural exposure to light was optimised with a better distribution and a light, Mediterranean illumination. Access to the market hall was improved as well with escalators leading from the 1st to the 2nd floor. A new ceramic floor offers a comfortable and clean way for our customers, their shopping carts and the market suppliers. […]

Land for construction of Mercat de l’Olivar, 1948

This video from the Spanish film library shows how it all started: the Mercat de l’Olivar in its 1st phase. It was an important historic occurrence when the most important grocery market on the island started its business in the city centre of Palma de Mallorca.

The Mercat de l’Olivar is one of the most important edifices of our city. It is not only the largest but also the most complete market hall in Palma. A stately yet plain building with a light facade, elevating out of the city’s heart and on the route through the old town with easy access from all four sides.

The revue team of “The Hole” paid a spontaneous visit to the market hall and advertised the show with an improvised play in the summer of 2015. Visitors were truly surprised by this fancy visit that certainly added some colour, a little bit of eroticism and a lot of humour to the daily shopping experience.

The Iberostar company organized a flashmob at the Mercat de l’Olivar including many people, who started a synchronised choreography at different stalls at the same time creating a special moment with an amazing atmosphere.

The famous gastronomical bloggers Garbancita and El cocinero fiel finished their Blogtour “MediterrAneamente de Estrella Damm” in Mallorca with a visit to the Mercat de l’Olivar, which after five intensive days was the perfect finale. Garbancita and @Elcocinerofiel visited the Mercat together with star-chef Fernando Arellano who has been awarded with two Michelin stars.
